Wood project

Tiffany’s Farmhouse Sign

Distressed Farmhouse Sign

Good morning readers! A couple weeks ago I took some scrap wood from one of my cupboards and turned it into a pretty farmhouse sign. I had been searching for a farmhouse sign to buy but the cheapest one I found, that I was absolutely in love with, was $99. I found plenty to choose from that were even more expensive than that. Ya’ll know I’m too cheap to pay that much for a sign. So, I brought out the paint brush and did it myself.

First, I used a dark brown/black paint that I had sitting around. I’m not sure of the exact color. I used it all and threw it out after this project. I painted the entire piece of wood that dark color. Let that dry. I used my sister’s Cricut to make my letter stencils. I still have the Cricut, oops, I better give that back to her AND buy one for myself. I love that thing. I’ve used hers for lots of projects. Thanks, sister.

After I had all of my stencils. I placed them exactly where I wanted them, and adhered them with regular tape. I’m sure there’s a better way to do it, but that’s how I did it and it worked. Once the stencils were all in place with tape, I painted the entire piece of wood using my white Valspar chalk paint. This is the same paint I used for my Jelly Cupboard.

Once the white paint was dry, I took all of the stencils off. I used my little handheld orbital sander to rough it up to give it the aged look. I wiped all of the debris off, then used Valspar’s sealing wax over the entire sign. That stuff dries pretty quickly, so I could put the antiquing wax on after that. I got it to the look I wanted, and put one more coat of the sealing wax over the entire sign. That’s all. Let it dry and hang that pretty sign.

I’m very happy with the way it turned out. Even more happy that I had all of the materials, so no additional money in this little project. If you haven’t checked out Jess’ Farmhouse Coffee Cabinet, you need to!! It’s pretty! Thanks for stopping by and be sure to follow us on Instagram and like us on Facebook. Have a terrific Thursday!

  1. Hi hon,
What size would you say the sign is? Would like to make one myself but I’m not sure of a size…
